Moldova strengthens guarantees for asylum seekers

To ensure that every person seeking asylum feels safe and is treated with dignity in Moldova, the Government of Moldova has approved new mechanisms and a methodology that will make the asylum procedure clearer, fairer, and more humane.

Under the new rules, asylum seekers, including those with special needs, will benefit from adequate accommodation, food, clothing, hygiene products, and the necessary assistance to continue their lives safely in our country. At the same time, the newly introduced cost estimation methodology and monitoring mechanisms will ensure transparency and responsible management of public funds.

The approved decision transposes European Union standards relating to asylum, contributing to the protection of human rights and the prevention of social marginalization. The application of the concepts of “safe country of origin” and “safe third country” will support the proper functioning of the asylum system, preventing abuse while maintaining access to international protection for those who truly need it.

The new provisions will enter into force on January 1, 2026.
