European Union supports strengthening Moldova’s migration and asylum system

The General Inspectorate for Migration (IGM) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs will receive support from the European Union to enhance its work in the areas of migration and asylum. Through a Twinning project, the IGM will develop a more efficient system aligned with European norms and standards.

The launch event was attended by Diana Salcuțan, State Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, representatives of national and international authorities, partner organizations and European institutions.

Over the next 18 months, IGM specialists will work with European experts to review and improve existing legislation and strengthen the institution’s technical capacities. The project will include training sessions, experience exchanges, study visits and updates to operational guidelines.

The project will focus on three key areas: strengthening institutional and administrative capacity, aligning asylum and migration legislation with European standards, and enhancing the state's ability to manage a potential influx of migrants or refugees.

“The successful implementation of these three components will not only lead to improved service quality and better access to protection measures, but also to the institutional strengthening of the General Inspectorate for Migration and its alignment with EU standards. It will help identify best practices that can be adopted by Member States, enabling more effective management of migration processes”, said the State Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Diana Salcuțan highlighted the importance of this initiative for Moldova, noting that key activities, such as the development of the initial work plan and the first expert missions, have already been carried out in the project’s first two months.

The project is being implemented by a consortium of three EU Member States: Sweden (lead), Romania and Greece. Through this initiative, Moldova will actively advance on Chapter 24 - Justice, Freedom and Security, as part of its European integration process.
