19 May 2025 Moldova continues to strengthen its commitment to public security, institutional reform and regional stability through its active participation in the 34th session of the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, recently held in Vienna. During the session, Minister of Internal Affairs Daniella Misail-Nichitin outlined Moldova’s strategic priorities in reinforcing the rule of law, preventing crime and ensuring community safety. The country’s internal affairs system is undergoing modernization through a forward-looking approach focusing on prevention, inter-agency cooperation and digitalization. These efforts are already yielding results: in 2024, crime rate decreased by approximately 2% compared to the previous year. This progress is attributed to the implementation of the National Program for Prevention and Combating Crime (2022-2025), as well as the strong partnerships developed with public institutions and civil society. A key focus of the intervention was strengthening the state's capacity to protect vulnerable groups and combat forms of violence that threaten social cohesion, including domestic violence and human trafficking. The minister highlighted several legislative advances, notably the introduction of the term "femicide" into national law, as well as ongoing collaboration with international organizations to support victims and facilitate their reintegration. Another growing area of concern addressed was cybercrime. In response to this rapidly evolving threat, Moldova has established a specialized cybercrime investigation laboratory, equipped with cutting-edge technology and staffed with professionals trained in advanced digital analysis techniques. This investment is part of a broader strategy to secure cyberspace and build public confidence in digital services. Moldova's capacity to manage crises involving nuclear, radiological or chemical threats was also addressed. In this context, the Moldovan minister held a bilateral meeting with Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, reaffirming the country's commitment to security and international technical cooperation. By engaging in this global forum, Moldova strengthens its role as an active and responsible partner dedicated to advancing security, justice and institutional resilience, while contributing to regional stability. The Vienna Conference remains one of the most significant international platforms for crime prevention, bringing together over 100 member states each year to shape effective and sustainable public policies. Participation in such events supports Moldova in its efforts to combat and prevent crime, in cooperation with its strategic partners. One such example is the collaboration with UNICRI, with which the Ministry of Internal Affairs has established a detailed Action Plan.
