The Republic of Moldova and Japan share common goals of modernizing security and enhancing emergency response capabilities. As a result, citizens will benefit from faster and more efficient emergency services, improved infrastructure and stronger protection against risks.
At the seventh capital-level meeting of the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Focal Points Network in Tokyo, Minister of Home Affairs Daniella Misail-Nichitin engaged in several bilateral discussions with high-level officials from Japan and other countries.
During the meeting with Japan’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Fujii Hisayuki, the discussion highlighted Japan's support for strengthening security and enhancing community resilience in Moldova. The implemented projects ensure that the emergency response services are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and critical infrastructure is modernized to better protect the population from fires and other emergencies. A key example is the acquisition of 19 fire trucks for the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU), which will enable faster and more effective emergency interventions.
Japan has also contributed to strengthening border security by equipping the Border Police and IGSU with specialized tools to manage refugee flows. This support has streamlined border processes and ensured safer conditions for both citizens and those seeking protection.
During the meeting with Katsuhiko Takahashi, Ambassador for Arctic Region and WPS, discussions highlighted progress in promoting gender equality and fostering a more inclusive and secure environment. In 2024, over 700 individuals received training on gender equality, while 20 women in the security and defense sector completed specialization courses. Additionally, the appointment of women to leadership roles and their participation in international peacekeeping missions have enhanced the diversity of intervention teams and strengthened crisis response efforts.
Discussions with Shohei Hara, Senior Vice President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), focused on the need to enhance disaster response and crisis management capabilities. The talks explored opportunities for collaboration on establishing an integrated emergency dispatch center in the center part of Moldova, aimed at improving coordination of emergency response services and reducing response times.
On the other hand, development of online safety platforms and strengthening cybersecurity measures to protect children in the digital space were the focus of discussions with Tatjana Macura, Serbian Minister without portfolio in charge of gender equality, prevention of violence against women and economic and political empowerment of women, given Serbia’s active efforts in this area as part of the WPS agenda.
