Moldovan Government approves Police Cooperation Convention with Belgium

 

Chisinau, June 12, 2024 - The Cabinet of Ministers approved today the Convention on Police Cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Moldova and the Government of the Kingdom of Belgium, signed in Brussels on April 29, 2024.

The main objective of the Convention is to foster friendly relations and enhance cooperation between the two countries, with a particular focus on strengthening police collaboration.

The areas of cooperation between the relevant authorities of the signatory parties include crimes against life, health, and personal integrity; illicit production and trafficking of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances, and precursors; illegal migration and international human trafficking; sexual exploitation and child abuse; theft, trafficking, and illegal trade in arms, ammunition, explosives, and dangerous substances; forgery of payment means and official documents; corruption and terrorist offenses; and cybercrime.

Preventing and combating organized crime is a priority for the Moldovan Ministry of Internal Affairs and is an important topic in international police dialogue. Therefore, the approval of this bilateral treaty is significant for facilitating the effective exchange of information and best practices between the police structures of both countries.

The competent authorities responsible for implementing the Convention are the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Prosecutor General's Office of the Republic of Moldova and the integrated police of Belgium.

Based on the Convention, the competent authorities of the signatory states may establish permanent or temporary working groups to address mutual issues relating to the above-mentioned areas and forms of cooperation. The signatory states may also second liaison officers who will exchange information, assist in preparing requests for mutual legal assistance, support authorities responsible for external border security and migration matters, assist authorities responsible for public order and security, and perform other tasks.

The Convention is compatible with the provisions of the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova, the UN Charter, the Republic of Moldova - European Union Association Agreement, and other international treaties and international commitments undertaken by our country.
