Moldovan police – the change has began

On August 13, 11.00 AM, at Vadul lui Vodă (IT Relax), the Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova - Mr. Vladimir Filat will present the conclusions and recommendations of the workshop regarding the police reform in accordance to the EU standards and norms, an event taking place between 9-13 of August.

The workshop regarding the modernization of the Moldovan police is organized by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Republic of Moldova, United Nations Development Programme, European Union High Level Policy Advice Team for Republic of Moldova (EUHLPAM) and the EU financed project „Support for the implementation of agreements between Moldova and EU”.

The organizers will make available the transport from Chişinău to Vadul lui Voda and return (leaving on Friday 13 August, 10.00 o clock, from MIA, Vasile Alecsandri entrance). In this sense, the representatives of media are asked to contact the Information and PR Department of MIA.

At the opening of the workshop on August 9, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. Victor Catan, has declared that “we are currently doing an evaluation of all the problems the Moldovan society is facing and as a result, we hope to find the right solutions and a functional reform so that the Moldovan police can be a protector of human rights and a reliable partner of the citizen, all in accordance to the EU norms and standards”.

From the European Union High Level Policy Advice Team for Republic of Moldova (EUHLPAM), Mr Dejan Mincic, Project Manager stated” This reform is initiated by the Ministry of Interior Affairs of Moldova and we offer the necessary technical assistance that hopefully will turn this into a success story.”

Mr. Martin Horseling, Team Leader of the EU financed project - Support for the implementation of agreements between Moldova and EU: “Within this exercise, our role is not only to assist the initiation of the police reform but also to implement it, because the reform means more then a change in legislation. I believe the actual implementation would require a change of mentality from both the policemen and the citizens.”
