MASS-MEDIA INVITATION

Reform of the MIA: A modern and transparent police service, in compliance with EU standards

A working session on the future reform and modernisation process of the police service of the Republic of Moldova, in line with the best international and European practice, will take place at „IT-Relax” premises, Vadul-lui-Voda, during the period from 9th to 13th of August, starting at 9.00. The reformed police service will serve the citizens, will observe and protect the human rights, will be amenable to law and transparent in its activities.

This event is organised, at the initiative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, with the support of the United Nations Development Programme, EU Delegation to the Republic of Moldova, EU High Level Policy Advice Mission to Moldova (EUHLPAM) and the EU funded project “Support for the Implementation of the Agreements between the Republic of Moldova and the European Union”.

During this working session, from the 9th to the 13th of August, a Road Map Police Reform, needed for the MIA reform process will be elaborated – a strategic document that will foster the placement of the Ministry within an inter-institutional context and will serve as a basis for future assistance initiatives from external donor organisations. In order to put in place the “road map”, a concrete and detailed action plan will be also elaborated.

Establishing a modern police service implies a comprehensive approach to issues facing any police organization, especially in countries that align with rule of law and democratic principles, and European integration aspiration, among which is the Republic of Moldova.

Minister Victor Catan, who will present an inclusive analysis of the MIA reform process and Mr. Wolfgang Behrendt, Head of Political and Economic Section of the European Union Delegation to Chisinau will open the first working session on August 9, 2010 at 9-00. At working sessions will participate experts from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Supreme Court of Justice, Prosecutor General’s Office, Border Guard Service, Centre for Combating Economic Crimes and Corruption, State Chancellery, Parliament and field NGOs.
