The Ministry of Internal Affairs and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) are advancing discussions on the launch of the European Union Border Assistance Project (EUBAP) - an initiative that will build on the EUBAM experience and support Moldova in modernizing border management along the Moldovan-Ukrainian segment.
MIA State Secretary Diana Salcutan and IOM Head of Mission Ester Ruiz De Azua reviewed the project’s shared priorities in light of the evolving geopolitical context and the country’s progress toward European integration.
In its position communicated to European partners, the Ministry emphasized the importance of reorienting EUBAP towards a "hard" component, focusing on investments in technology, digitalization, infrastructure and mobility, to complement the training and expertise-based initiatives already in place. This adjustment would help prevent overlap with other programs and ensure a more direct contribution in strengthening national security.
The reorientation of EUBAP, through the updated project objectives proposed by the MIA, will support Moldova’s commitments in the process of accession to the European Union, particularly those under Chapter 24 Justice, Freedom and Security. This initiative will demonstrate the country’s capacity to protect the EU’s external borders and contribute to collective European security.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs values the constant cooperation with the IOM and appreciates the European Union’s support in developing modern, secure and efficient border management systems in Moldova, for the benefit of both citizens and the national economy.
