The European Union will provide €1.25 million in funding and technical expertise to support the General Inspectorate for Migration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (GIM) in strengthening Moldova’s migration, asylum and integration system. The 18-month Twinning project will facilitate the alignment of national legislation and procedures with EU standards and support Moldova’s preparations for implementing the EU’s New Pact on Migration and Asylum.
The initiative was discussed during a meeting between Secretary of State, Diana Salcuțan, and representatives of the EU Delegation, along with partners from a consortium of three EU Member States: Romania, Greece and Sweden, with Sweden serving as the lead partner.
As part of this project, GIM personnel will receive support in evaluating migration and asylum management capacities, assessing the degree of alignment with the EU acquis, and tailored recommendations. The project will also include the exchange of best practices, staff training and updated operational guides to introduce modern solutions, already successfully applied in other European countries, enabling the implementation of the commitments related to the EU agenda.
Additionally, the project will review asylum application procedures, with particular focus on vulnerable cases, involving special needs, assess reception and accommodation conditions, conduct simulations to test operational readiness, and enhance inter-institutional cooperation mechanisms. These efforts will improve Moldova’s capacity to receive and integrate foreigners, better manage large migration flows and align national legislation with EU standards.
The project is scheduled for completion by October 1, 2026.
