Moldova's security ecosystem strengthened through international partnerships

Ensuring the security of Moldova's borders and communities through effective internal affairs mechanisms, so that citizens feel protected and receive quality services, was a key focus of discussions held by the delegation of the Ministry of Internal Affairs during bilateral meetings at the Munich Security Conference. Additionally, Moldova's European integration process was a topic of interest for international partners engaged in these meetings.

In discussions with Hans-Georg Engelke, State Secretary of the German Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community, both sides emphasized joint efforts to enhance border security and regional stability, as well as to improve mechanisms for managing illegal migration. Strengthening information exchange and police cooperation with German partners leads to more effective border controls, reduced risks of cross-border crime and greater public safety. The discussions also underscored the importance of collaboration in countering hybrid threats and external interference aimed at destabilizing democracy.

During the meeting with David van Weel, State Secretary of the Ministry of Justice and Security of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, discussions focused on implementing innovative solutions to combat disinformation, monitor risks and strengthen cybersecurity. Notably, the Netherlands supports Moldova’s capacity-building efforts through the EU Partnership Mission to Moldova (EUPM), contributing to the modernization of security infrastructure and the training of professionals in data protection and cybercrime prevention. In this context, the need to establish an operational center within the Ministry of Internal Affairs for rapid cyber incident response and critical infrastructure protection was reiterated.

Another key topic was the promotion of the European digital identity, a strategic initiative aimed at integrating Moldova into the EU’s digital ecosystem, ensuring citizens' access to modern and secure services.

Discussions with INTERPOL Assistant Secretary General Valdecy Urquiza underscored the importance of close collaboration between Moldova and INTERPOL in combating cross-border crime. The meeting focused on expanding operational intelligence sharing and implementing advanced technological solutions to identify and prevent security threats. One key topic was the potential secondment of Moldovan liaison officers to INTERPOL, which would facilitate coordination in investigations and enable swift responses to organized crime and terrorism. Additionally, the discussions explored new opportunities for developing strategic partnerships and strengthening institutional capacities in the fight against global threats.

During the meeting with Joachim Herrmann, Minister of the Interior of Bavaria, the Moldovan delegation highlighted the strong cooperation between the Moldovan and Bavarian police. Both parties emphasized the importance of continuing and expanding cooperation, particularly in countering hybrid threats and adopting modern solutions to prevent security risks. A key focus was the launch of joint projects aimed at enhancing the efficiency of law enforcement agencies, improving response capabilities and strengthening public safety. These initiatives will contribute to better staff training and the optimization of operational processes, enabling the ministry personnel to effectively address emerging challenges.

By deepening its partnerships with international counterparts, the Ministry of Internal Affairs is reinforcing its efforts to ensuring a safe environment, providing efficient services and implementing modern solutions to today’s security challenges.
