Today, the Government approved a set of important amendments to the temporary protection regime for displaced persons from Ukraine.
The proposal responds to the ongoing humanitarian and security situation affecting thousands of refugees, for whom Moldova has become a place of safety. The key measure is the extension of temporary protection until March 1, 2027, in full alignment with the European Union's decision and current regional developments. This extension ensures stability, predictability, and continuity for displaced persons who live, work, and raise their children in Moldova.
At the same time, the draft introduces a new procedure for extending temporary protection upon request, starting in 2026. Applications will be submitted electronically, free of charge, through the government platform. This approach will help maintain accurate and up-to-date administrative records of persons actually present in the country, enabling faster responses and the development of public policies better tailored to real needs.
Overall, the impact of these changes is both positive and balanced. The measures ensure continued protection for vulnerable persons, preserve access to education, healthcare, and employment, strengthen the state’s administrative capacity, and promote the efficient use of public resources, while fully respecting human dignity.
