16 October 2025 Regional cooperation in combating organized and cross-border crime, along with intensified joint actions to enhance community safety, were the main topics of discussion at the meeting between Minister of Internal Affairs Daniella Misail-Nichitin, the head of the General Police Inspectorate Viorel Cernăuțeanu, and Dr. Oguz Serkant Akın, Director General of the Southeast European Law Enforcement Center (SELEC). The discussions emphasized the importance of operational cooperation and the exchange of information among law enforcement agencies in the region to prevent and combat crimes such as human trafficking, smuggling, money laundering, and cybercrime. The partnership with SELEC provides the Republic of Moldova with access to modern analytical tools and support for protecting citizens, dismantling criminal networks, and strengthening public trust in law enforcement agencies. Through this collaboration, joint operations have been conducted that resulted in the disruption of groups involved in human trafficking and cigarette smuggling, as well as the detection of illicit financial flows. At the same time, the parties discussed the possibility of launching a structured program for the exchange of experience and best practices in the use of OSINT tools. Such a program would support police officers and investigators in collecting, analysing, and correlating information to identify criminal activities, illegal networks, or suspicious financial transactions. Moldova's participation in SELEC is ensured through liaison officers from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Customs Service, ensuring the smooth implementation of international activities and the exchange of information between member states. SELEC brings together 11 member states and more than 25 international partners, including Interpol, the European Union, and various governmental and non-governmental organizations, coordinating joint efforts to combat cross-border crime.
